A Perfect Match Scott And Kent

Scott is a veteran who suffered from being struck by lighting as well as witnessing the tragedies of combat, including witnessing a close friend lose his life in a vehicle fire. Once back home, Scott had strong physical and emotional reactions to thunderstorms and fires, as well as feeling unable to be around crowds of people. Through Mountains To Miracles, Scott was connected to Kent who became a trained service dog and a diabetic alert dog. An extraordinary part of this story is that Kent was due to be euthanized, because he was a shelter dog, had very little hair, and needed medical attention. Scott stated, “Kent saved my life and we saved his.” Kent is also trained to detect thunderstorms and will lay his body over Scott, using his body weight to continuously distract Scott from the storm, by moving and nudging him. If Kent sees Scott picking at his skin, a tic reaction to thunderstorms, Kent will take his paw and move Scott’s hand away to make him stop. Being a diabetic alert dog, Kent will also lick Scott’s face if his blood sugar is low, or nudge Scott with his nose if his blood sugar is high. When driving, if there is a thunderstorm or a fire nearby, Kent will come from the backseat and lay across Scott’s lap until they get home. Scott said, “I don’t have to say or do anything, he just knows and comes into the front seat to lay on me.” The bond between Scott and Kent is undeniable. As for Scott’s experience he stated, “Mountains To Miracles for what they do, is probably one of the best in central N.Y. and the Capital Region.”
